Wrench-shaped warning icon on my 2009 Sportswagen |
|
So, the icon turns on as my car starts up. Is this something to worry about?

Ok I will guess, That is a your new vw symbol that your mechanic is needing to make a house payment. I bet your owners manual says exactly that. Allan

The vehicle only has about 5,600 miles on it... |
|
and if it's got a service code already, is this the shape of things to come? Is it too late to get a do-over and go with a trusty (but boring) Civic/Accord?

You're right about the mechanic needing rent money. |
|
Basically, the wrench symbol means it's time to service the car. Simply routine maintenance, triggered by the 5,000 mile odometer reading.

This is a service light, not a code. It means that it is time to get your 1st service done.
Civics/Accords are great if you like driving boring, under powered cars that are not nearly as safe as VW's. All cars can have troubles and yes VW's have had bad reps in the past, but I have some personal experiences with Hondas not being so impressive either. My mothers 04 Accord was replaced by Honda after taking it to the dealer 13 times for check engine lights. She now proudly drives a 2008 Passat and has had no issues.

Boring versus dependable... |

So far, I haven't had any troubles with my VW ... but it's only got 6,000 miles on it. I recently took my Jetta SportWagen on its first road trip. The car really wants to run. All the American cars and Japanese cars simply slow down when there's a hill. The five-cylinder just keeps chugging along. Granted, the VW doesn't have quick 0-30 mph acceleration, but once it gets going, it really wants to run.
