I have a VW Passat Estate TDI, 2002 - recently the rear passenger footwells have been getting increasingly damp with the rear footwell behind the driver's seat now being like a swimming pool ! Grateful if anyone could advise me what the likely cause of the problem together with the solution. Much appreciated

Crying or Very sad Dear FotherM, I,m havin the same problem but behind the front passenger seat, i,ve took took it to a mechanic friend who has forced water at the car directly at the car seals, but..... cannot seem to get water IN, so therefore the seals must be in good nick (54 reg.).
Takin it to vw repairer sat 13th for his opinion, obviously a fairly common problem? hope we can keep each other posted, speak soon.

Very Happy was told it is the pollen filter getting saturated with the weather/ condensation, gettin fixed next sat.
was also told that there is about 2" of foam sound proofing under the carpet, so therefore there is more water than is actually visible.
Recommend getting it done as soon as poss. because there is also wiring under the carpet that the water could do damage to, good luck.

Hi there
I have just sorted this same problem out, if you go to the following link it explains in easy to follow steps how to do it. I am no car mechanic and it took me about 45 mins. Hardest part is getting the battery out.

Hi Guys,
Funny old thing; I'm getting the same problem, Possible causes could be a couple of things, as previously mentioned there may be a faulty seal on the pollen filter housing which may have become sodden or perished thus allowing the water to enter the car,VW are aware there is a problem and have even issued a directive to VW dealers on the correct procedure to take when repairing the problem. If the two drain holes in the plenum chamber are blocked up this would cause the build up of water which would eventually seep into the pollen filter housing The battery and the battery tray need to be removed to check the holes for blockages. Another possible cause could be that the drainage pipes/holes from the air con evaperator have become blocked, this again will cause the condensed water to back up through the system and end up exiting from the heater vent ducts, In my case that seems to be mainly into the rear passenger footwell which have been soaked, there may also be some in the front passenger footwell which needs to be investigated as there is a wiring loom under the front carpet and if that gets wet and damaged it will cause all manner of electrical problems. To every one with this problem, Happy Hunting, Hope you can solve it without incuring too much expense.

Have just had the same problem with my Passat. The 'battery compartment' contained approx 3 gallons of water due to blocked drain hole. The heater fan was picking this up and blowing it into the front and rear o/s footwells. Unfortunately the ECU was flooded and unrepairable and the auto box exhibited signs iof ill health. Have just settled a repair bill for over£1700 Sad . In my previos Passat the same thing happened (blocked drain hole) and the wiper motor had to be replaced. I am in discussions with the main agent currently, as the blockage of thishole appears to be caused by a design fault. Suggest all owners check the water level in this compartment on a regular basis!
