Golf 2001 GLS 4d 2.0L auto Transmission problem? |
|
Hello everybody.
I have Golf 2001 GLS 4d 2.0L auto.
We had snow the day the things started... Suddenly I got high RPMs and no power, like gear switched to N. I dropped speed, got gear back and same thing happened again and after couple of those got "Check Engine". It looks like first 2 or 3 gears switch fine but then I have to make high RPM (over 4.5K) and drop accel. pedal then gear switch to a higher one. Also when I brake, when speed goes down to 25M/H I get push from transmission, otherwise braking is fine.
I went to the mechanic. I can not provide exact error codes, but there was 3: speed sensor, gear ratio something and TCC something(i do not have traction control, so not sure what is that). After reseting the computer, the guy tested the car and it was fine. I left the mechanic and after 10 min I got the same problem and no "Check Engine" light. I brought car back and they told me that I need to replace the transmission They said that if that was just bad speed sensor then I would definitely get "Check Engine" light.
If anybody could make things more clear I would really appreciate it. Could it be just speed sensor or it is more than that? I'm not sure if second time it happened when I whent to certain gear...
I always had the feeling that my RPMs are little higher then necessary (over 3K on 50M/H) , but I've never tried another golf so I'm not sure
Again, I would appreciate any help.
Mike

Hi Mike
you may not need a whole trany but you will need to have some test done to be sure.
first a preasur test need to be done on th etrans and also a leakage test. if these pass then all you are going too need to replace is the valve body.
see if you rVW shop can doo these test to confirm before you spend 5500. on a trans replacement when it will be way less with the test and valvebody.

Thank you very much. I did not expect replays so fast.
I wonder if regular repair shop can do those tests or only VW dealer can ran them? Do you think I need to tell to dealer what to do or they will do it by themselves. I did not go to VW dealer yet and took it to some cheap place I know.
I can not believe it happened when I was just couple of thousands out of warranty...

If you must take it to the dealer just have then check it out and bring up the th etest after you give all th einfo to them.
try to go on a test drive with a Tech to let him see and feel what is happening.
this will also help.
good luck

Follow up... |

I took if from that "cheap" place to the VW dealer (about 5 miles) and car drove fine. Dealer said that transmission has to be replaced. They said something wrong with the computer inside the transmission and it can be taken apart and I have to replace the whole thing... They quoted me $3950, not sure if they included labor. They offered to take the car trade in for $1000 They did not charge me for diagnostic because I had some recalls done, so I saved $120+tax... "Cheap" shop quoted me $1200 for used transmission, including labor.
Anyway I left dealer and problem did not appear again... Now, after 4 weeks I already put about 1000 miles on the car and problem never came back... Weird...
Not sure how it is possible, but it is fact.
volkshaus, could you clarify things, if you can
Thank you

I never figured out what was the problem and actually traded car in a year ago. The problem never came back, but I didn't drive it for too long: couple of thousands miles.
I can assume that reseting computer twice and dealer's tests helped somehow, at least for some time, so you should try to do that.
