 Engine wanted for 98 Jetta GLX VR6 |

I'm looking for a new or rebuilt engine for a 98 Jetta GLX VR6. I'm in Chicago, IL and was quoted $1350 for a used engine w/ a little over 100k miles. The mechanic actually told me that I should just get a new car, but the thought of letting my Jetta go depresses me.
Appreciate any suggestions anyone can give.
