Catalytic converter problem 01 Jetta 2.0 |
|
I just got a call from my mechanic that my catalytic converter needs to be replaced, along with the oxygen sensor, and is going to cost around $880 total. Has anyone else experienced a problem with their cat converter on a 2001 Jetta 2.0? Does this seem like a reasonable cost? Any suggestions??????

My check engine light has been on since before I bought my car, and the problem causing it is the Catalytic Converter. Sometime soon I'm going to cut it out, because the dealer want's $913 to replace it. $880 is a pretty good price, but if you really want to save money, find a cat online (http://www.catalyticconverter.net/ is a good spot) and then find a mechanic who's willing to put it in for you. Or if you find the "fart can" noise appealing, you could always just cut out the cat and straight pipe it (provided you're not under any emissions laws). That's the route I'm taking. Good luck!

Eight years not unusual for a cat to go bad. What are your symptoms?

I have a 2001 Jetta with the check engine light on with a CAT code. VW part is $800. After market $300. VW say DO NOT use after market (no surprise there) Anyone out there used after market CAT and if so what was the result?

Mine was an 01 1.8 but cost shouldnt be much diff. I got a direct fit magnalow with all proper sensor threading. It was 285 from summit with free shipping, think I paid 50 labor, worked like a charm. You dont need a factory vw cat. I have replaced 02 sensors in the 175-200 range.
