2008 Volkswagen Touareg 2 - Top Speed
I have made 2 mistakes with this car:-
1. I test drove a 2008 V10 in Europe
2. I purchased a 2008 V10 in the USA
These cars are not the same and it can only be the ignorance of US drivers that allows VW to sell such an inferior product in the USA. I really regret my purchase and I am in the process of changing the Touareg for a Range Rover.
In addition to the list of deficiencies between the European model and the one sold in the USA [including a lighting system that borders on being dangerous] the final straw was when the Touareg broke down earlier this week. The help from VW roadside assistance bordered on the farcical. I had had the Touareg serviced at 10,000 miles [long-distance - highway only - no off-road] and been cheerfully informed that it needed a complete new set of tires and that the noise emanating from the front suspension was tire-wear [ I did not and do not believe that]. Less than 60 miles after the service I noticed an oil-warning light and the oil pressure gauge reading zero. I checked oil-level and temperature and everything was fine; I was only 2 miles from the main VW dealership in Houston and gave them a call.
They told me that under no circumstances should I start the car or attempt to drive it and told me to call VW roadside assistance. I tried to do so on several occasions and each time was placed in a queue. Listening to The Ride of the Valkeries on a Thursday afternoon in 99 deg F temperatures is not my idea of fun and I gave up until Friday morning. When I tried again, I was again placed on hold until eventually VW roadside assistance answered my call. I then spent 90 minutes waiting for a tow-truck [again in 99 deg temperatures] and eventually gave up, cancelled the service and drove to the dealership in my other car.
I complained to the service-manager and spent another hour whilst he arranged a tow-truck, returned to the Touareg and spent another hour waiting on assistance. The Touareg was eventually delivered to the dealership late Friday afternoon having taken almost 24 hours to travel 2 miles after my first call for help. As I suspected the car had a faulty sensor. Not surprisingly the dealership had no spare and could not order one until start of business Monday morning. Very surprisingly no loaner car was available but I was informed that it might be possible to rent a car for me. Unfortunately I was also told that the rental could only be authorised for a day and that I would have to go to the rental company before 1.30 pm on Saturday afternoon. I pointed out to the dealer that it was already 1.15 pm and that the rental location was 15 miles away. Long silence from the dealership... followed by sorry in that case we can't help.
The first. The only. The last VW I will ever buy. People need to look past the publicity hype - I don't wish to tow a 747 and the last time that I drove across Patagonia I driving a jeep.

Now the next generation Touareg 2 promises to offer the premium SUV buyer even more power, safety, comfort, and versatile on- or off-road ability. Produced with Volkswagen’s demanding production tolerances, close attention to detail, and consistent use of high-quality materials, the Touareg 2 is set to capitalize on the success of its predecessor.
