Beetle Drum to Disk Brake Conversion |
|
Try this website: http://www.vwheritage.com/ssp/Brakes/Brake-Conversion/?templateID=ssp . It's regarded by as major modification by insurers and you most likely will require a proessional engineering design certificate to re-register the vehicle with local authorities. This includes a performance test of your modified brakes through a testing station and a finding of compliance. The supplier may be able to supply a STC allowing the retrofit.

Hello Oscar, A lot will depend on where in the world you live. Where I live providing you have correctly working brakes, that are safe, unless you cause a wreck its acceptable. However they must meet or exceed standards. 1970 era are easy to exceed. If it was me, I would make certain that I not only did the front disc units, but the brake hoses <5> were and continue to be a weak point. The steel brake lines and the balancing valve are about 40 yrs old if original. I have experienced a 100kph emergency brake stop after I broke a rear hose on an 1971 super beetle. Then I changed all 5. Allan
