Does anyone have information regarding the location of the G68 speed sensor in an 09a 5 speed tiptronic transmission in a 2002 Jetta EYP model? It shows a code of PO722 (no signal from the output speed sensor). I am wondering if I can replace this sensor without pulling the transmission.

No. For some moronic reason still debated by philosphers and alchoholics into the wee hours, Jatco when building the tiptronic transmission...decided to bury two sensors inside the drum. Even pulling the valve body will not help you! It must come APART! If the trans has more than 30k on it, youd wanna consider clutches and basically a full rebuild as you dont wanna be doing that twice or risk anything really stupid like a leak.

Ohm the sensor at the input harness(goes over the top and into the valve body area). make sure you dont have open circuit (Im not at work so dont have my pin chart, but its available).

Make sure all info you use is for a tiptronic *5* speed OD auto, as many people will start telling you NO, ITS UNDER THE LEFT MOUNT, DONT WORRY ITS NOT THAT BAD.
Only the 4 speed auto was under the left mount. 2.0 cars. 1.8s with turbo you have to remove trans and fully disassemble just to see it.

Sorry.

VW charges about 5000 USD for replacing that sensor if you arent under warranty because they will not replace the part, they will sell you a reman trans installed. You can special-order the sensor only...If you can get an independent trans shop to go in and replace it for you, even then you are probably looking at around 1/2 the VW price and VW was gonna give you a full rebuild with a 2 year warranty. But call around for pricing and finding someone willing to do it and check their warranty. Its not a popular trans with rebuilders, so not all shops will work on that model. Like I said, ohm your wiring from where it enters the trans back to the module (youll have to look up the wire colors as Im not at work). if the wires are good, you either have a harness break inside the trans, or the sensor has failed. Sensor fails are not completely uncommon unfortunately. Wish I had better news. That trans actually has 3 speed sensors, did your code specifically identify G68? the generic OBD2 code sometymes is mistaken, there is an output speed sensor on the left side of the trans that would set an engine code only. G68 will set engine and trans codes usually, or sometimes just a trans module code (00281 if I remember, been awhile so dont take it as gospel)

Thank you tlk914. I had posted this back in Febuary and did some digging since then. Just for your info, I did pin the harness and found no breaks. In fact I got the required 500 to 600 ohms across the sensor, so I ruled that out. It turned out to be a faulty TCM which I picked up for a hundred bucks. I could not find anyone to actually test the TCM, but I took a gamble and replaced it and that fixed it.
